REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS: Permanent art at The Postmark Hotel

Location: The Postmark Hotel, 180 Main Street, Newmarket, ON
Deadline: December 2, 2022, 11:00pm

Artist Opportunity

The Postmark Hotel invites an artist/artist team to create a permanent indoor artwork to be installed in the hotel’s rooftop restaurant.

The total budget for the project, including artist fees, materials, and installation is CAD $25,000 (plus HST).

The artist will be selected through a 2-stage competition. Through this open call, artists are invited to submit a portfolio of previous work. A longlist of artists will be selected by the hotel curator and an outside art expert. A shortlist of 3 artists will be selected by an internal panel including hotel ownership representatives and the hotel curator. The 3 shortlisted artists will be invited to prepare a detailed design and budget, for which they will receive compensation. The internal panel will select the artist for the commission.

Location and materials

The artwork will occupy a feature wall in the rooftop restaurant. This space is open to both hotel guests and the community.

The space is vertical and measures approximately 2.77m (9 feet) high x 5.74m (18.8 feet) wide. The work will be executed on or attached to the wall, not freestanding. The work does not need to occupy the entire rectangular space (see rendering) but it should have a substantial presence on the wall.

Requirements for the work:

  • 2D or low relief 3D
  • low maintenance
  • robust materials
  • work must be readable and aesthetically appealing in daylight (natural light) and low light (artificial) in the evening
  • painted or photo murals may be considered, however the work must incorporate a dimensional/textural element (which could include light)

Materials/techniques can include (alone or in combination):

  • metal
  • wood
  • paint or photo mural (but must include textural/dimensional elements, which could include light elements)
  • glass
  • light (neon gas will not be considered)
  • acrylic

Due to maintenance and conservation limitations, we will not consider video/work on monitors or screens, work that responds to data or requires a computer, mechanical or motorized work, water, or textiles.

Background and context

Scheduled to open in spring 2023, The Postmark Hotel is a sister property to Toronto’s Gladstone House (established 1889) and The Broadview Hotel (established 1891). Like the other two properties, The Postmark Hotel is a heritage building (built in 1914) and its name is a nod to its former life as the town’s post office. This landmark on Main Street will feature 55 guest rooms, a lobby bar and bistro, and panoramic rooftop restaurant and event space.

The hotel experiences are centred on creativity, inclusivity, community and delight. Each hotel showcases work by local and regional art, and this call is part of the Postmark’s extensive art program.

$25,000.00 CAD (maximum before HST). This is the total amount available for all related expenses of this art project including, but not limited to: artist fees, all applicable taxes, renderings, materials, technical consultations and approvals or other expertise as required, fabrication, installation, insurance, equipment, travel to meetings and to the site, and an artist statement for completed work.

The selected artist will enter into a written agreement with The Postmark Hotel. This agreement will address the artist’s obligations, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Materials
  • Timelines
  • Installation
  • Maintenance and/or conservation plans
  • Warranty
  • Copyright

  • is committed to devoting more time to artistic activity, if possible financially

Artists must have successfully completed installations at a similar scale to this project.
Artists must reside with a 75km radius of Newmarket.
Artists must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

The Postmark Hotel is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. Qualified applicants with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences are encouraged to apply.

The shortlisted artists will be notified on December 16 and invited to submit a design proposal in a PowerPoint presentation. Additional information will be provided to help short-listed artists prepare their proposals.
